Peter Mayer led a team that prepared a 2024 updated guidebook of water conservation best practices, on behalf of Colorado Water Wise. First published in 2010, the Best Practice Guidebook is a fundamental resource for water efficiency professionals in Colorado and beyond.

Colorado WaterWise has just dropped an updated version of its Water Conservation Best Practices Guidebook, and if you care about Colorado’s water (or just want to sound smart at your next dinner party), it’s worth a look. The new guidebook streamlines the original fourteen best practices down to a svelte seven, reflecting how much the world of water conservation has changed over the past decade.

This isn’t just a list of “turn off the tap while brushing your teeth” tips. It’s a comprehensive resource for water conservation professionals, loaded with the why behind each best practice, real-world implementation considerations, water-saving estimates, costs, and plenty of case studies and examples. The guidebook even points you to additional resources if you’re hungry for more detail.

The update was no small feat. Starting in fall 2022, Colorado WaterWise gathered input from stakeholders across the state, holding meetings to get feedback on everything from the guidebook’s structure to the nitty-gritty of its content. The project was made possible thanks to grants from the Colorado Water Conservation Board and the Colorado River District.

If you want to see how water conservation has evolved—and get your hands on the latest strategies and tech—head over to the Colorado WaterWise website. The updated guidebook is publicly available and ready to help you (and Colorado) save every drop.
